The neighbourhood on the western hillside whose outdoor escalators, murals and hip-hop culture became the emblem of Medellín’s turnaround. Every tour covers the same core — the escalators, the graffiti, the story of Operation Orión and what came after — but they differ in group size, whether the Metrocable is included, and how much food is involved. Go in the morning; afternoons are crowded and often wet.

Guatapé and El Peñol
Two hours east: the 200-metre granite monolith of El Peñol (about 700 steps to the top, and a view worth every one), the reservoir with its boat trips, and the town of Guatapé with its painted “zócalo” facades. It is the most popular day trip from Medellín and, on a clear day, one of the best in Colombia. Standard tours run 10–11 hours with breakfast and lunch; private tours let you skip the crowds at the rock by arriving early.

Santa Fe de Antioquia, the region’s colonial-era capital, is a hot, pretty, cobbled town about 90 minutes northwest — a good alternative to Guatapé if you have done the rock. A note on Pablo Escobar tours
They exist, they are heavily marketed, and they are widely resented in Medellín, where many people lost family to the violence the tours package as entertainment. The city’s own tourism messaging pointedly focuses on what came after. We do not promote them; the Comuna 13 tours cover the same history from the perspective of the people who lived it, and are better for it.

Do Medellín tours pick up in El Poblado?
Almost all of them; it is the default pickup zone. Each Viator listing states the pickup policy — some collect from any hotel in the district, others from a meeting point near Parque Lleras or the El Poblado Metro.
Can I do Comuna 13 and Guatapé on the same day?
Only on a private combo tour and only if you are prepared for a very long day. With two or more days, do them separately.
Should I book tours in advance?
For Guatapé on weekends and for anything private, yes. Comuna 13 group tours usually have availability a day or two ahead outside of December and Holy Week.
What should I bring?
Sunscreen and a hat for Guatapé and paragliding; a light rain jacket most afternoons; small cash for snacks and tips; comfortable shoes for the escalators and the 700 steps.
