Drop down out of the mountains northwest of Medellín and the air turns hot and dry. Santa Fe de Antioquia — the region’s capital until 1826 — is a grid of whitewashed colonial streets, and just outside town stands one of the Americas’ early great suspension bridges. It is an easy day trip from Parque Lleras.
Town and bridge
The pleasure is walking: cobbled streets, whitewashed houses with heavy wooden doors, several old churches and the Plaza Mayor. It is small enough to see in a few slow hours — with a raspao (shaved ice) in hand, because it is genuinely hot.
Outside town, the Puente de Occidente — built by engineer José María Villa and finished in 1895 — spans the Cauca River and is a national monument. It is the classic photo stop.
Bus or tour
Buses leave from Terminal del Norte (metro to Caribe station) and take about 90 minutes. Tours from El Poblado add pickup, the bridge, meals and sometimes a coffee stop on the way, and drive through the 4.6 km Túnel de Occidente.
