Rainy afternoon, forgotten charger or a cinema night: three big shopping malls sit a short ride from Parque Lleras on or above Avenida El Poblado. Here is what each is good for — and when the independent shops of Vía Primavera are the better choice.
What each one is good for
Santafé. The biggest choice in one place, on the stretch of Avenida El Poblado known as the Milla de Oro. Department stores, international brands, a supermarket and a cinema. Each August it hosts a large flower display for the Feria de las Flores.
Oviedo. Smaller and older, right beside Santafé. Useful for currency exchange, electronics and a quieter browse.
El Tesoro. Up the hill with more than 400 shops, a cinema and a big food court. Go for the views at sunset; budget a taxi each way.
When to skip the mall
If you want something made in Medellín rather than an international brand, stay on foot: Vía Primavera’s designer shops are a block from the park, and Manila has more independent stores a short walk away.
