Vía Primavera, Medellín

The tree-lined street of independent Colombian designers one block from Parque Lleras. What to buy, when to go and where to stop for coffee.

A block from Parque Lleras, Vía Primavera is the quiet daytime counterpart to the park’s nightlife: a leafy stretch of Carrera 37 lined with shops run by Colombian designers, plus cafés and small restaurants. It is the best place in El Poblado to buy clothing, jewellery and gifts that were actually made in Medellín.

What it is

An open-air alternative to the malls

Vía Primavera opened in 2010 when a group of young designers from Antioquia set up shop together, offering an open-air alternative to El Poblado’s shopping centres. The concept stuck: today the block mixes clothing and shoe boutiques with perfumeries, cafés, restaurants and a hotel.

The name comes from the trees and flowering plants that shade the pavement — the street feels a world away from the bars a block over, even though you can see the park from the corner.

What to buy

Things you won’t find at the mall

Most shops sell their own labels: women’s and men’s clothing, swimwear, leather goods, handmade jewellery and homeware. Prices sit above market stalls but well below imported designer brands, and the quality is the point.

Primavera Coffee & Shop combines a café with a store of Colombian-designed clothing, jewellery and plants — a good first stop if you want coffee and a browse in one place.

How to do it

A simple afternoon plan

Start mid-afternoon on Vía Primavera, stop for coffee, then walk one block to Parque Lleras and up into Provenza as the restaurants open for dinner. If you want a guided taste of the city first, a food or coffee tour in the morning pairs well.
