El Poblado, Medellín: residential towers climbing the green hills of the Aburrá Valley

Museo El Castillo

A Loire-style castle with gardens on the hill above El Poblado — hours, tickets, how to get there from Parque Lleras.

On the hill above El Poblado, behind iron gates, sits a building that looks lifted from France’s Loire Valley. Museo El Castillo is a former family home turned museum, holding Medellín’s largest collection of decorative arts and surrounded by formal gardens — the calmest half-day you can spend within a short ride of Parque Lleras.

What it is

A castle with a family story

The house was built in a Gothic, Loire-château style and has been kept largely as the family left it: bedrooms, dining room and library, plus collections of furniture, porcelain and paintings. The museum describes it as the city’s largest collection of decorative arts.

The gardens are half the reason to come — fountains, lawns and views over the valley. Allow around two hours for the house and grounds.

Getting there

From Parque Lleras

The museum is uphill and south of the park. A taxi or app ride is the easy option. By public transport, take Line A to Aguacatala station and a bus up the hill; walking from Santafé mall takes about half an hour, steeply uphill.

Several museum and city tours include El Castillo alongside the Museo de Antioquia downtown, which saves organising transport between them.
